MONOCHROME X
Location: Groningen, Netherlands.
Year: 2025.
Monochrome X is an interior defined by a controlled, almost sculptural use of black, punctuated by a single color intervention – an electric blue that appears only where the space needs focus or contrast. The project is located in Groningen and was designed as a compact, highly edited sequence of rooms where material and light carry the entire expression.
The kitchen establishes the tone: matte black cabinetry, coarse-textured wood and a monolithic island set against a concrete floor. A thin blue light frame introduces the project’s only vivid accent, echoed later in the seating, bathroom fixtures and lighting details. Every appearance of this color is intentional, used sparingly to guide the eye.
In the living area, the elongated blue sofa becomes the spatial anchor absorbing light and creating a soft counterpoint to the otherwise restrained palette. The room is kept deliberately dark to enhance projection quality and to emphasize the contrast between fabric, shadow and the reflective surfaces around it.
The bathrooms follow the same logic but with a stronger graphic presence. Deep black walls with scattered speckles frame solid, intensely blue volumes – the basin, the tub, the cabinetry giving the space a distinct identity without relying on ornament.
The bedroom takes a quieter approach, using black timber, low lighting and a minimal arrangement to preserve a sense of calm. Here the blue returns only as a subtle vertical line, maintaining continuity with the rest of the project.
Monochrome X is built around precision: limited materials, a disciplined use of color and a focus on atmosphere over decoration.
